about

Dedicated to John Balmer, 1833-1852

‘A sad accident occurred to a young man named Balmer, belonging to the band of the 65th regiment. Balmer, while bathing at the head of the bay after his musical labours of the day, was bitten by an enormous shark on the thick part of the thigh and the calf of his leg. A boat which was about 20 yards distant went to his assistance on hearing him scream, but, although picked up, he survived only a few minutes, from the femoral vessels being so dreadfully lacerated....’
